Lovely antique Red Wing blue and rust pattern laid over buttery colored clay is most commonly referred to as Spongeware, but also as Saffron Ware or Spatterware. This particular paneled pattern is often sought by collectors due to its two-color design and iconic shape. The number "6" marking on the bottom of this Red Wing spongeware bowl indicates the size of the bowl and suggests it was likely produced in the 1920s or 1930s.This is the only marking on the bowl which indicates the age. Early Spongeware bowls did not have any writing or stamp on the bottom. Red Wing reproduced the bowl in the 60s and 70s, adding a blue or red stamp reading Red Wing Oven Ware. This is an excellent example of nearly 100 year old Americana stoneware and is in excellent condition given its age. No cracks or chips. Dimensions are 6 3/8" in dia. and 4 1/2" high.
