The AN 5736-1 was a standard instrument found in many WWII aircraft, including the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell bombers, and P-38 Lightning, P-40 Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt, and P-51 Mustang fighters. Is an "artificial horizon" instrument that displays the aircraft's orientation relative to the actual horizon, helping pilots fly in instrument meteorological conditions. It is a vacuum-driven, gyroscopic instrument with a miniature aircraft and a horizon bar to show pitch and bank, something necessary to mantain the plane in the correct conditin to fly.
